What Is Fascial Therapy & Scraping?
Fascial theray, also known as fascial scraping or Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation (IASTM), is a specialist treatment targeting the fascial system: the connective tissue network that surrounds, supports, and interconnects every muscle, organ, and structure throughout the body.
The fascia plays a crucial role in force transmission, movement coordination, and proprioception (the body's sense of its own position). When healthy, fascial tissue is pliable, hydrated, and responsive. However, injury, surgery, repetitive strain, prolonged posture, or chronic inflammation can cause the fascia to thicken, adhere, and form restrictions, creating a tightening effect that limits movement, increases pain, and places additional load on surrounding muscles and joints.
Using smooth-edged tools applied directly to the skin with a small amount of oil or lotion, a trained therapist uses scraping strokes to identify and treat areas of fascial restriction, adhesion, and scar tissue. The technique stimulates a localised healing response, breaks up tissue densification, and improves the glide between fascial layers, restoring movement and reducing pain in ways that manual massage alone cannot always achieve.
Fascial therapy may be delivered as a standalone session or integrated into a broader treatment programme alongside chiropractic care or sports massage.
Benefits of Fascial Therapy & Scraping
Fascial therapy and scraping can provide significant benefits for those with chronic tissue restrictions or movement limitations:
• Improved mobility and range of motion in restricted joints
• Release of scar tissue from old injuries, surgery, or repetitive strain
• Reduction of chronic muscle and fascial tightness
• Support for recovery from conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, and IT band syndrome
• Reduced pain and discomfort in chronically affected areas
• Improved nervous system communication with the musculoskeletal system
• Enhanced treatment response when combined with chiropractic care or deep tissue massage
• Faster recovery from soft tissue injury when used as part of a rehabilitation plan
What to Expect During Your Session
Your fascial therapy session begins with a consultation covering your health history, areas of concern, and treatment goals. Your therapist will apply a small amount of oil to the target area and use a smooth, purpose-designed IASTM tool to glide firmly across the skin.
You may feel a scraping or dragging sensation as the tool moves over areas of fascial restriction. These areas often feel noticeably different from healthy tissue (denser, grittier, or more resistant) and your therapist will focus their work here. Some temporary redness or mild bruising in the treated area is entirely normal and indicates increased circulation and healing activity in the fascia.
Sessions typically last 30–45 minutes for targeted fascial work, though the technique may be incorporated into a longer massage or chiropractic appointment. Aftercare involves gentle movement, staying well hydrated, and avoiding intense exercise for the rest of the treatment day. Mild soreness for 24–48 hours following treatment is normal.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Fascial scraping shares similar principles with Gua Sha, a traditional Chinese technique using tools to scrape the skin to stimulate circulation. Modern IASTM tools are designed for clinical use and applied with greater anatomical precision (targeting specific fascial layers, tendons, and muscle-tendon junctions) compared to traditional Gua Sha.
-
Yes, some redness, petechiae (small red dots), or mild bruising in the treated area is expected following fascial scraping. This is a sign that the tissue is responding and circulation has been stimulated. These marks typically resolve within a few days.
-
This depends on the extent of the restriction and how long it has been present. Some clients notice significant improvement after 2–4 sessions; others with longer-standing adhesions may benefit from ongoing treatment as part of a broader rehabilitation plan. Your therapist will advise after an initial assessment.

Yes, fascial therapy and chiropractic care complement each other well. Fascial restrictions can affect joint mobility and nervous system function; addressing both the soft tissue layer and the spine/joint structure through a combined approach often produces faster and more complete results.
