What Is Hot Stone Massage?
Hot stone massage is a deeply therapeutic and restorative form of massage therapy that combines traditional massage techniques with the use of smooth, heated stones; typically made from basalt, a type of volcanic rock prized for its exceptional heat-retaining properties. Hot stone massage has roots that stretch back thousands of years before hot stone massage was popularised in modern massage therapy in 1993.
Modern hot stone massage combines traditional massage techniques with the use of warmed stones to help muscles soften more deeply and comfortably. The warmth of the stones can promote relaxation, ease muscle stiffness, support circulation, and enhance overall comfort during treatment.
At Sona Chiropractic, hot stones are heated using a professional massage stone heater to 45–50°C (135–145°F) before use. During your hot stone massage, a skilled massage therapist uses the warmed stones in two ways: as an extension of their hands for long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements across the muscles using Swedish massage techniques; and for stone placement, positioning heated stones on specific areas including the spine, shoulders, hands, and feet.
Stone placement allows the stones' therapeutic heat to penetrate up to 4cm into muscle tissue, helping muscles to relax far more quickly than manual pressure alone can achieve.
Hot and cold stones (a technique associated with lastone therapy) can also be used in combination, cold stones applied to inflamed or specific areas for contrast therapy. Ask your massage therapist about this option if you have specific needs around inflammation or acute muscle pain heat management.
Hot Stone Massage Benefits
The hot stone massage benefits are both physical and emotional, making this one of the most comprehensive massage therapy experiences available:
Deep muscle relaxation: Heat from hot stones penetrates the deeper layers of muscle tissue, helping to relax muscles, ease muscle spasms, and reduce muscle tension that standard massage cannot always reach.
Improved blood flow: Heat causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow to the treated area and delivering oxygen and nutrients to tired muscles while removing waste products.
Stress and anxiety relief: Hot stone massage reduces stress and anxiety effectively. The combination of warmth, touch, and flowing movement promotes the release of endorphins and activates the rest-and-digest response.
Chronic pain management: For those living with chronic pain, fibromyalgia, or rheumatoid arthritis, hot stone massage offers meaningful relief. Massage therapy lowers substance P levels — a neurotransmitter involved in transmitting pain signals — reducing sensitivity and helping ease pain.
Restorative sleep: Hot stone massage promotes restorative sleep. One study showed massage helps postmenopausal women with insomnia. Massage is increasingly recognised as a beneficial alternative medicine approach for sleep difficulties.
Reduced depression and fatigue: Stone massage has been shown to ease depression, reduce fatigue, and promote a deep sense of well being that extends beyond the treatment itself.
Immune system support: Swedish massage techniques used in hot stone massage may boost the immune system, even a single session can support immune function.
Less pain from rheumatoid conditions: Participants with rheumatoid arthritis reported less pain and improved mobility after massage therapy sessions involving heated stones.
Is Hot Stone Massage Right for You?
Hot stone massage is suitable for most adults seeking deep relaxation, stress relief, or relief from muscle tension and stiffness. It's particularly beneficial for: those who carry chronic tension that standard massage hasn't fully resolved; people who feel the cold or have poor circulation; those who prefer a more gentle approach to deep work; and anyone wanting a deeply restorative, sensory experience.
However, certain conditions mean hot stone massage may not be appropriate. Consult a healthcare provider before booking if you: are pregnant; have high blood pressure or cardiovascular conditions; have skin conditions, burns, or open wounds in the treatment area; experience nausea or dizziness; or have cancer.
Hot stone massage is not recommended as a substitute for medical treatment. If you have specific needs or are unsure whether stone massage is suitable, please speak with us before booking and we'll advise accordingly.

What to Expect During Your Hot Stone Massage Session
At the start of your hot stone massage, your massage therapist will heat the basalt stones to the correct temperature in a professional massage stone heater. Stone placement begins once you're settled on the massage table; smooth, warmed stones are positioned along the spine, between the toes, and on the hands or feet, where their heat gently penetrates the muscles beneath.
Your massage therapist then uses additional hot stones for long smooth strokes across your muscles, combining this with traditional massage techniques and Swedish massage techniques to create a flowing, deeply relaxing treatment. Massage oil is applied to ensure smooth gliding of the stones and hands across the skin. The heat helps your muscles to relax rapidly, allowing the therapist to work with gentle pressure while achieving the depth of benefit usually associated with deep tissue massage.
A full body hot stone massage session typically takes 60–90 minutes. After your session, drink plenty of water and allow yourself time to rest and absorb the benefits. Some mild warmth or slight redness in treated areas is normal and settles within a few hours.
