What Is Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is one of the most widely practised forms of massage therapy in the world and the foundation upon which many other massage types are built. Swedish massage uses five core swedish massage techniques: effleurage (long, gliding strokes toward the heart), petrissage (kneading, squeezing, and lifting movements), tapotement (rhythmic tapping across the muscles), friction (rubbing to soften connective tissue and stimulate deeper tissues), and vibration (rhythmic shaking to relax muscles and improve nerve function). These techniques work together to release tension from soft tissues, boost blood flow, and encourage a full-body sense of calm.

Swedish massage is a gentle, flowing style of massage designed to reduce muscular tension, improve circulation, support relaxation, and encourage a sense of ease and balance. This treatment is ideal if you are feeling physically tight, mentally overloaded, or simply in need of restorative time.

At Sona Chiropractic, a skilled massage therapist delivers Swedish massage on a massage table using massage oil or lotion, adjusting depth and more pressure or less pressure based on what your body needs on the day. Unlike deep tissue massage, which targets deeper layers of muscle tissue with sustained firm pressure on specific areas, Swedish massage focuses on the soft tissues closer to the surface, making it low risk, broadly accessible, and deeply effective for relaxation.

Health Benefits of Swedish Massage

The health benefits of Swedish massage are well-documented and wide-ranging — from physical pain relief to emotional resilience and improved sleep:

  • Stress and anxiety reduction: Swedish massage triggers the relaxation response, reducing cortisol and activating the parasympathetic system to ease anxiety symptoms effectively. Regular sessions of Swedish massage can ease symptoms of anxiety disorders.

  • Improved blood circulation: Swedish massage techniques boost blood flow and improve blood circulation by dilating blood vessels and encouraging fluid movement through soft tissues.

  • Muscle tension relief: Effleurage and petrissage relieve pain from tense muscles, release tension across the back, neck, and shoulders, and stimulate deeper tissues beneath the surface.

  • Pain relief: Swedish massage can help relieve pain related to back pain, low back pain, neck pain, and general muscular soreness. Research by Gholami Motlagh F and colleagues supports measurable pain reduction with regular Swedish massage therapy.

  • Better sleep: Swedish massage improves sleep quality and is a valuable complementary therapy for insomnia. One study showed massage helps postmenopausal women with insomnia.

  • Blood pressure reduction: A Swedish massage session has been shown to lower systolic blood pressure in healthy women — improving vital signs without medication.

  • Immune system support: Massage therapy can lower stress, which supports immune system function. Swedish massage techniques used alongside other treatments contribute to integrative health outcomes.

  • Lymphatic drainage: The flowing strokes of Swedish massage stimulate lymphatic drainage, supporting the body's natural waste removal processes.

  • PMS symptoms: Research indicates Swedish massage can ease PMS symptoms, including discomfort and mood changes, in some individuals.

Is Swedish Massage Right for You?

Swedish massage is ideal for: first-time massage clients who want a low risk introduction to massage therapy; those experiencing stress and anxiety or mental fatigue; individuals with mild-to-moderate muscle tension or back pain; people seeking better sleep and improved mood; and those who want a full-body relaxation treatment without the intensity of deep tissue massage or deep pressure on specific areas.

If you have chronic pain or a sports injury requiring targeted therapeutic work, your massage therapist may recommend deep tissue massage or sports massage, or a combination approach. Swedish massage pairs beautifully with hot stone massage for clients who want deeper muscle softening without firm pressure.

If you have blood clots, active skin conditions, or certain other health conditions, please consult a doctor before booking.

Meet Your Massage Therapist

Ainsley Smith

Massage Therapist

Hi, I’m Ainsley Smith, a qualified massage therapist in Kirriemuir, Angus, offering Swedish massage and hot stone massage at Sona Chiropractic. With a Diploma in Swedish Massage, I take a calm, caring approach, tailoring each treatment to the individual, whether your goal is easing muscular tension, reducing stress, or simply taking time to relax and reset.

My interest in massage grew from a genuine passion for physical and mental wellbeing and the positive impact therapeutic touch can have. I find it incredibly rewarding to help clients feel more comfortable in their bodies and leave feeling lighter and more at ease.

Outside of work, I enjoy mountain biking, strength training, and exploring the outdoors, bringing that same appreciation for balance and movement into every treatment.

What to Expect During Your Swedish Massage Session

Your Swedish massage session takes place in a calm, welcoming treatment room at Sona Chiropractic. You can undress to your comfort level, most clients remove their outer clothing but remain covered by towels throughout, with only the area being worked on exposed. Your massage therapist will use massage oil or lotion to allow smooth, uninterrupted gliding strokes across the muscles and tissues.

A full Swedish massage session typically lasts 60 minutes, covering the back, legs, arms, neck, and upper body. A 30-minute massage session focuses on specific areas. Before beginning, your massage therapist will ask about your health history, any injury or health conditions, and any specific areas of concern. You'll also discuss whether you prefer lighter or more pressure during the treatment.
