What Are Medical Acupuncture and Dry Needling?

Medical Acupuncture and Dry Needling are targeted therapies that use very fine, sterile, single use needles. Treatment is directed towards areas of muscular tension, sensitivity and restriction, and works well alongside chiropractic care or massage.

  • Medical Acupuncture is a Western approach to acupuncture, based on anatomy, physiology and pain science. Fine needles are placed at selected points and may be left in place for a period of time.
  • Dry Needling is a more targeted musculoskeletal approach. Fine needles are inserted directly into specific muscles or areas of myofascial tension and sensitivity.

The approach we use is tailored to you, your symptoms and what you want to achieve.

What to Expect During Your Session

  1. Assessment: your first appointment includes a discussion of your symptoms, health history and goals, so we can decide whether needling is appropriate and tailor treatment to you.
  2. Treatment: sessions last 30 minutes. Most people feel a brief pinprick, followed by a dull ache or mild twitch in the muscle, which usually settles quickly.
  3. Afterwards: some people feel mild soreness or tiredness for a day or so. We will give you aftercare advice before you leave.
  4. Your plan: some people benefit from a short course of regular sessions, while others use needling occasionally as part of their wider routine. We review your response as you progress so the frequency and length of care stay right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture or dry needling hurt?

The needles are very fine, so most people feel only a brief pinprick. Dry needling can cause a short muscle twitch or dull ache, which usually settles quickly.

What is the difference between Medical Acupuncture and Dry Needling?

Medical Acupuncture places needles at selected points and may leave them in for a period of time. Dry Needling targets specific muscles or areas of tension more directly. We will recommend the approach that suits you.

Is it safe?

We use sterile, single use needles and complete a full health assessment before treatment to make sure needling is appropriate for you.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies from person to person. Some people benefit from a short course of regular sessions, while others use needling occasionally. We review your progress as we go.

How long is a session?

Sessions last 30 minutes for £55 and your first appointment includes your assessment.

Can I combine it with chiropractic or massage?

Yes. Needling is often used alongside chiropractic care or massage at Sona.
