What Is PEMF & Red Light Therapy?

At Sona, we offer PEMF and Red Light Therapy together as a complementary approach to recovery, relaxation and physical wellbeing. Either therapy can also be used on its own where that suits you better.

  • PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) Therapy uses gentle pulses of electromagnetic energy, delivered either as a whole body session or focused on a specific area. You feel little more than a mild tingling or warmth, and many people find sessions deeply relaxing.
  • Red Light Therapy (Photobiomodulation) uses targeted red and near infrared wavelengths of light. Our clinical grade, full body system covers a large treatment area in a single session, so there is no need to work area by area.

Both therapies work by supporting the body’s natural processes, so their effects tend to build with regular, consistent sessions rather than from a single visit.

Benefits of PEMF & Red Light Therapy

PEMF Therapy

  • Relaxation and wellbeing: a gentle, non-invasive session that fits easily into a routine built around rest and recovery.
  • Recovery support: a complement to movement, rehabilitation, chiropractic care and massage.
  • Whole body or targeted: sessions can cover the whole body or focus on one area, depending on your goals.

Red Light Therapy

  • Exercise and training recovery: a popular addition for runners, gym-goers and anyone with a physically demanding routine.
  • Physical comfort: many people find sessions warming, soothing and relaxing.
  • Full body coverage: our full body system treats a large area at once, keeping sessions short.

Combined Together

  • A quiet, restful break that works well before or after chiropractic care or massage.
  • A plan built around you, reviewed as you go.

Is PEMF & Red Light Therapy Right for You?

PEMF and Red Light Therapy suit people who want a calm, hands off addition to their recovery or wellbeing routine, including active people, those already receiving chiropractic care or massage at Sona, and anyone who finds hands-on treatment too intense.

They are not suitable for everyone. Your first appointment includes a health assessment, and we will discuss your history before any session. Please let us know if you:

  • have a pacemaker or any implanted electronic device
  • are pregnant or may be pregnant
  • have epilepsy or a seizure condition
  • are sensitive to light or take medication that increases light sensitivity
  • are being treated for cancer or any other serious condition

If you are unsure which approach suits you, our chiropractic care and massage pages explain how these therapies fit together.

Dr Ruth Abisset

Doctor of Chiropractic | Certified PEMF and Red Light Therapy Practitioner

Hi, I'm Ruth, Doctor of Chiropractic and founder of Sona Chiropractic in Kirriemuir, Angus. As a family chiropractor, I offer gentle, nervous-system-informed care for individuals and families across Kirriemuir, Forfar and the wider Angus area.

I'm also certified by the Association of PEMF Professionals in both PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field) therapy and Red Light Therapy. These sessions are available at the clinic, either on their own or alongside chiropractic care.

My approach combines clinical expertise with a calm, person-centred philosophy. I focus on how the spine, joints and nervous system work together, and I tailor every session to the person in front of me.

What to Expect During Your Session

  1. Health assessment and goals: your first appointment starts with a conversation about your health and what you hope to achieve, so we can create a personalised plan.
  2. Your first session: the initial appointment lasts around 30 minutes and includes your first 10 minute therapy session.
  3. An introductory phase: we may suggest 3 to 5 sessions over the course of a week so you can experience the therapies and see how your body responds.
  4. Ongoing sessions: after that, most people fit sessions into their routine weekly or fortnightly, with frequency tailored to your goals and response.

We will explain what to wear when you book, and eye protection is provided for Red Light Therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does PEMF feel like?

Most people feel very little, perhaps a mild tingling or gentle warmth. Many find it relaxing enough to drift off.

Is Red Light Therapy the same as a sunbed?

No. Red and near infrared light is not ultraviolet light and does not tan the skin.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies. We often suggest an introductory phase of 3 to 5 sessions over a week, then weekly or fortnightly sessions tailored to you.

Can I have PEMF or red light on its own?

Yes. The two are offered together, but either can be used individually where that suits you better.

Can I combine it with chiropractic or massage?

Yes. Many clients book PEMF and Red Light Therapy alongside chiropractic care or massage as part of a wider recovery routine.

How long is a session?

Sessions can be booked for either 15 or 30 minutes. Your first session will include an assessment and discussion around your goals, and we will confirm the length of follow up sessions when we agree on your plan.
