What’s the difference between sports massage and soft tissue therapy?
In truth, they’re very similar.
Both sports massage and soft tissue therapy use hands-on techniques to work with muscles, fascia, and movement patterns. The goal in both cases is to reduce tension, improve mobility, and support recovery.
The main difference is in the therapist’s training focus and approach.
At Sona:
Maya is our sports massage therapist. Her background is rooted in performance and recovery, so sessions may feel more structured and movement-focused — ideal for gym-goers, runners, or anyone wanting to optimise how their body performs.
Struan is our soft tissue therapist. His approach focuses on relieving accumulated tension and restoring comfortable movement in everyday life — whether that’s from desk work, stress, or general tightness.
Both are highly skilled and work intentionally with your body.
Do I need to be an athlete to book a sports massage?
3
Not at all.
Sports massage isn’t just for athletes. It’s for anyone experiencing physical tension, restricted movement, or recurring muscular discomfort.
If you:
Sit at a desk all day
Carry stress in your shoulders
Feel tight through your hips or lower back
A sports massage approach may be helpful — even if you’ve never stepped into a gym.
I just want to relax. Which massage should I choose?
4
If your main goal is relaxation and nervous system reset, Swedish or hot stone massage is ideal.
These sessions:
Use slower, flowing techniques
Encourage full-body relaxation
Help shift your body from stress to calm
Wear whatever you’re comfortable arriving in.
During treatment:
You’ll be appropriately draped at all times
Only the area being worked on will be uncovered
Your comfort and privacy are always respected
5
What should I wear?
Will massage hurt?
6
Some therapeutic work (especially deep tissue or sports massage) can feel intense at times — but it should never feel overwhelming or unsafe.
We always work within your comfort levels and communicate clearly throughout the session.
Relaxation sessions are gentle and soothing.
How often should I book massage?
7
This depends on your goals.
For recovery or ongoing tension:
Every 2–4 weeks is common.
For relaxation and regulation:
Monthly sessions can help maintain balance.
We can recommend a schedule based on your individual needs — without pressure.

Can massage help with stress and anxiety?
9
Massage supports the nervous system by helping your body shift out of fight-or-flight mode and into a more regulated state.
Many clients report:
Feeling calmer
Sleeping better
Clearer thinking
Reduced physical tension
While it’s not a medical treatment for anxiety, it can be a powerful part of supporting overall wellbeing.
Is this linked to chiropractic care?
10
Massage stands entirely on its own.
However, some clients choose to explore chiropractic care if they want additional support for posture, movement, or nervous system health.
If that’s ever relevant for you, we’ll explain your options clearly — without pressure.
What if I’m not sure which treatment to book?
11
That’s completely fine. Contact us on 01575 520488 or contact@sonachiropractic.com and we’ll discuss your options to see what might be the best fit for you.
